The year is 1941 and London is under attack from Germany's bombers during World War II. The Pevensie children -- Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy -- are just four of millions of children evacuated from London to the safer countryside. The Pevensies arrive at the home of Professor Kirke. It is a vast house with many rooms to explore, and one special room holds nothing but a large wardrobe. It is through that wardrobe that Lucy, Edmund, Peter, and Susan discover a new world and strange adventures.
Narnia is a land in a different dimension. It is populated by talking animals, dwarves, giants, dryads and naiads, hags and witches. Narnia was a wonderful land of peace and freedom until the White Witch took over, calling herself Queen. She has made it perpetually winter in Narnia, and all the creatures live in fear of her.
Character Descriptions.
Note on Ages: The Pevensies are all between 9 and 18 years old. Most of the other roles are adults or teens. We need many people to play animals and other creatures - and we would like those roles to be a mix of adults, teens, and children. In fact, a few families of foxes or hedgehogs or fauns (etc.) would be welcome.
Lucy Pevensie. Between 9 and 12 years old. Lucy is the youngest Pevensie sibling. She is the first to enter Narnia. She has a pure heart and never lies. Later, as a Queen of Narnia, Lucy is known as Lucy the Valiant. Peter Pevensie. Between 15 and 18. Peter is the oldest of the siblings. Over the course of the story, he learns how to be a leader in both our world and in Narnia. Susan Pevensie. Between 15 and 18. Susan is the second oldest Pevensie. She, along with Lucy, is allowed to accompany Aslan to both his sacrifice and his resurrection. Edmund Pevensie. Between 11 and 14. Edmund has a rich story of growth. At first he teases his younger sister and even falls prey to the White Witch's lies. He becomes a traitor, yet by the power of Aslan, Edmund is changed and he joins Aslan's side. Later in life, he is called King Edmund the Just. Aslan. The Lion, "not tame but Good," as Mr. Beaver calls him. Aslan is the Christ figure in Narnia. He is brave, loving, powerful, gentle. Aslan has been gone a very long time, but his very name brings hope to the animals. White Witch. She rules Narnia through magic - evil magic. It is she who makes Narnia live in perpetual winter - but never Christmas. She has a deep hatred for Aslan. Mr. and Mrs. Beaver. Two faithful followers of Aslan. They lead and guide the Pevensie children in Narnia. Mr. Tumnus. A faun who befriends Lucy. He is the first creature Lucy meets in Narnia and they become friends. Ginarrbrik the Dwarf. He serves the White Witch, accompanying her everywhere. Fenris Ulf. The Wolf who is Captain of the Queen's Secret Police. He is menacing and fights with Peter. Professor Kirke. The Professor is very wise and a good advisor to Peter and Susan. He has some key things to say about truth and character. Father Christmas. Father Christmas exudes good cheer, but he can be serious as well. He works in service to Aslan. Narrator. This person helps take us through the story. Adult King Peter. As adults, the Pevensies discover a way back to a long-forgotten England. This is one scene, but the role may be doubled with other roles, or if you prefer to be in just one scene, this might be a good role to try for. Adult King Edmund. See Adult King Peter above. Adult Queen Susan. See Adult King Peter above. Adult Queen Lucy. See Adult King Peter above. Fox. A talking fox who stands up to the White Witch - until she turns him/her to stone. Squirrel. With the Fox above, and suffers the same fate. Dryad. A dryad is a tree nymph. She speaks with the Beavers about Aslan and is also part of Aslan’s Army. Naiad. A naiad is a water nymph. She also speaks with the Beavers about Aslan and is part of Aslan’s Army. Aslan's Army. In addition to Fox, Squirrel, Dryad, Naiad, the Beavers and Tumnus, Aslan needs other woodland creatures to help him. Some of these woodland creatures will also act as stagehands: moving small trees or chairs to help change the scenes. These are great roles for people who don't want a lot of lines but who like to help move the story along. Some of the Aslan's Army will need to be able to pose frozen for a couple of the scenes. Witch's Army. The White Witch needs her own army to both taunt Aslan on the Stone Table and to fight Peter and his army: Hags, ghouls, wraiths, ogres, dwarves.
